JOB DESCRIPTION 

 

JOB TITLE:               Horticultural Assistant               GRADE: 

REPORTS TO:          Director of Horticulture             STATUS:        Non-Exempt 

DEPARTMENT:       Linnaeus Teaching Garden      DATE:            01.10.08

 JOB SUMMARY: 

Responsible for specified areas of the gardens including maintenance.  Supervise one or more seasonal help and student interns as needed.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:                                   % of Time

1.         Ornamental Garden Maintenance-Maintain assigned garden                   30%

areas including but not limited to seasonal flower displays,

perennials, and containers.  This includes installation, fertilization,

irrigation requirements, diagnoses of diseases and pests, and the

treatment of them. 

2.         Tree and Shrub Maintenance-Perform the pruning, removal of                  30%

dead wood, fertilization, disease and pest control, and other

tasks necessary in the maintenance of the trees and shrubs. 

3.         Assist with training and supervision of Linnaeus Teaching Gardens         12%

            Children’s program. 

4.         Assist with training and supervision of Gardens Interns.                               12% 

5.         Assist with Linnaeus Gardens seminars and demonstrations.                     3% 

6.         Paved Area Maintenance- Perform routine cleaning, basic repair,              3%

            snow and ice removal of the parking lots, walkways and other

            paved areas.                                                                               

7.         Leaf Removal- Remove leaves from lawns, shrub and planting beds.          3% 

 8.        Equipment and Ornamental Mechanical Fixture Maintenance-                      2%

Maintain and repair tools and equipment as necessary.  Understand

and be able to operate the function of all water systems and

irrigation systems.                                                                                              

9.         Security/Public Relations-Greet all visitors with a friendly                                  5%

and cheerful attitude.  Go out of the way to make them feel

“at home.”  Maintain the security and integrity of the grounds

and serve as a source of information for visitors.  Abide by

garden safety policies and procedures.  Perform guided tours

and education lectures to the public as needed.                   

10.       Perform related responsibilities as required or assigned. 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

1,         Knowledge and practiced skill in a broad spectrum of horticulture disciplines and          

techniques including but not limited to: arboriculture, ornamental display gardens, herb and vegetable gardens and basic small engine maintenance. 

SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS:

1.         Work required periodic assigned scheduled weekend, holiday and special event duty.

2.         Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

3.         Be willing to work in all elements of weather.
