Fruit and Vegetable Garden Tour
The Vegetable Garden is located south of the Pavilion Garden and east of the Learning Center. The central portion of the Garden is comprised of four raised planting beds.
Planting space is maximized by incorporating raised beds into the surrounding enclosures. The base of the north fence is planted with strawberries and the fence itself will eventually support espaliered fruit trees. The latticework fence to the south provides support for tomatoes and grape vines.
These features demonstrate how gardeners may achieve maximum design impact in small urban spaces.
The plant selection is continually changing as the seasons progress from spring crops such as onions and lettuce through tomatoes and okra in the summer to cool weather crops again in the fall.
There is also a compost/recycling station where visitors will learn environmentally friendly methods for dealing with garden waste.
Chemical fertilizers and sprays are not used; we rely instead on the planting of disease and insect resistant varieties and other techniques such as interplanting. Mulch is used extensively to conserve water and to act as soil enrichment.
Linnaeus Gardeners are volunteers who often have years of home gardening experience. In addition, they participate in a 12 week training program that includes both classroom lectures and hands-on training.
These volunteers are also responsible for maintaining the Garden.
Linnaeus Gardeners love to share their knowledge. There are always volunteers in the Garden who will be happy to show you around and answer your questions.
